An omen of death that arrives at ones door either the eldest member of the house, or one who is ill, will be visited and die.
They are seen many times after a disease outbreak.
Residents of Luzon and Visayas at one time painted white crosses on their doors to ward off the Kumakatok. This was said to make the trio switch from residences to government buildings, hospitals, and even churches.

Reported sightings have decreased significantly since World War II. Some believe it was because many buildings were destroyed at that time and the Kumakakok had few doors to knock on
