Strum and Drang means “storm and stress

  • Style or movement of German literature circa late 18th century
  • Characterized as impetuosity of manner, exaltation of individual sensibility and intuitive perception
  • Opposition to established forms of society and thought, and extreme nationalism
  • Title of a 1776 romantic drama by German poet Friedrich Maximilian von Klinger (1752-1831)
  • He gave it this name at the suggestion of Christoph Kauffmann
  • The play’s original title was Wirrwarr, it was however changed to Sturm und Drang before premiering
  • Der Sturm is also the German title of Shakespeare’s play The Tempest
